Yay, Cristina & Burke are a couple. I love them two together. I could care less about whether Meredith gets McDreamy, but I love me some Burke & Cristina action.

And Bailey is married!

The porn guy was great. Sandra Oh talking dirty - not hot, but very funny.

I almost forgot the girl who needed the Shamin. She had a very pretty face. However, I prefer episode M*A*S*H episode when the had to bring in the shamin.

Grey's Anatomy 10/30/05

10/30/05

Another winner of an episode. With a major train wreck providing the patients for an extended shift for our SGH surgical interns, the writers really know how to posit a gut-wrenching situation with the 2 people speared by a metal pole, and separating them meant one of them would die for sure.

After delivering her "choose me" speech, Meredith spends the hours after her shift waiting on McDreamy to show up at the bar, but the train wreck postpones his answer, but in the end, he returns to the salmon-colored spawn of satan.

Alex spends the extended shift screwing things up, even letting a woman die on his watch, but he gains a "foothold", and regains his mojo, which pushing Christina to the back of the surgical line.

Izzie is invited to become a protege of Mrs. McDreamy in her pediactric specialty.

I agree, this show's writing gets stronger and stronger. A little cheesey with the metaphors tonight but otherwise another great ep. Slowly becoming a favorite of mine.

Another good episode. This show as far surpassed the housewives in terms of quality this season.

The symbolism of having Meredith screaming about them abandoning the dying girl was laying it on a little thick. Atleast her mother wasn't on this week.

Glad Mrs. McDreamy will be sticking around.

No opening credits this week. Thank god and I hope it's permanent. The opening credits sequence for this show was horrible and even a little insulting.

Very good episode. The corn was a little thick with the missing leg, but it was just dark enough to pass.

Meredith is still the weakest part of the show. Too melodramatic and self-involved. I wouldn't normally make fun of a speech impediment, but her lisp is distracting at best.

The pole didn't pass through the people, it was at a different angle going in than it was going out. Even with that the pole people was a great storyline. The impaled actress was fantastic. Her facial expressions and voice made the entire segment.

Good to see some Undeclared alum action. That plotline was great. Whole show was top notch.

The girl was Monica Keena, who has died a few times on TV shows (Dawson's Creek, anyone?)

Me, too. Glad Shephard and Meredith aren't together as of now. Only one intern/resident relationship at a time, please.

I was actually impressed w/ Monica Keena in this ep.

Glad Alex found his mojo.

Christina still annoys me.

And I still have a hard time w/ the 30-hour shift.

I'm with you there. There is enough drama on the show they feel the need to slide that in on us? What purpose did it serve?

Could they have used a 'smaller saw' since they were in such a HURRY?

Why didn't they cut the ends of the pole? Then less trauma for the removal?

And the Black Woman Resident character is still kinda pigeon holed.

I agree.... i've never cut anything that big with a dremel (SP?) and not had the blade break.

Also, I think that Mrs McDreamy specializes in pediatric surgery.

Maybe they were afraid to use a Sawzall in such a confined space?

that is what i thought as well. but so far this series she has rolled folks back to the OR for an exploratory laparotomy and salpingectomy (for the ectopic), in utero laser surgery for twin-twin transfusion syndrome, and a c-section. none of which are done by pediatric surgeons. the only pediatric surgery case she has scheduled, she cancelled -- the infant was too sick (or something along those lines).

I think she is an expert in gynecological surgery. The one case where she had an infant that was premature, she needed to ask her husband to do the surgery as she specializes when the baby is in utero.

i was leaning towards ob-gyn as well (especially given her salmon colored scrubs). but why then would she take an interest in a general surgery intern as she did at the end of the episode?

Aren't most of the surgical interns general at this point? I figured they would choose their specialty later, which is what the doctor was offering Izzy.

I think they are definitely taking liberties to keep her character around. I mean how many pediactric surgeries can they have? My wife(a labor & delivery nurse), was shocked when they showed her giving the epidural last night, a job reserved for the anaesthesiologist.

And why was she doing the c-section anyway? Her personal delivery doctor would be the one to do it.

general surgery is a 5 year residency. the surgical subspecialties typically do 1 to 2 years of general surgery training (the intern year plus additional "upper level" time), and then many more years of specialty traing (for a total of 7 for neurosurgery, 6 for plastic surgery, and 5 or 6 for ortho -- depending on the program).

ob/gyn is a 4 year self contained residency. subspecialty training in gyn onc, perinatology (high risk ob), infertility, etc .. , is typically an additional 3 to 4 years.

in my experience, general surgery and ob/gyn residents rarely if ever cross in training institutions (other than in turf, consultation, and OR assignment wars, with each side shaking their head at the other). ob/gyn residents (or practitionersfor that matter) rarely perform their own labor anesthesia (except for local blocks).

btw, i enjoy the show as well. these details probably mean nothing to 99.9% of the people who watch the show.
